2026–2031 Logistics Industry Outlook, Diversification Becomes a Key Growth Driver

Indonesia’s logistics industry is increasingly being challenged to identify new sources of growth beyond its traditional core businesses. Shifting demand patterns, regulatory changes, pressure to improve operational efficiency, and the growing complexity of supply chains are encouraging logistics companies to move beyond conventional business models. Sector diversification and the development of new business lines are emerging as important strategies to strengthen resilience while creating sustainable opportunities for long-term growth.

This perspective was at the center of the Logistics Executive Forum 2026, themed “Sector Diversification as the Next Growth Engine,” held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. The forum explored how companies can respond to industry challenges by developing new sources of growth while strengthening their competitiveness amid a rapidly evolving business landscape.

The forum also  provided executives and industry professionals with an opportunity to exchange perspectives on the logistics outlook, business development strategies, and the risks associated with transforming and expanding existing business models. Beyond the business discussions, the event also facilitated networking and direct interaction among industry stakeholders, creating opportunities for knowledge sharing and potential collaboration.

One of the key perspectives was “Business Diversification Strategy: Building a New Growth Engine in the Logistics Industry.” The presentation highlighted the importance of expanding business portfolios to reduce companies’ reliance on their existing core sectors and revenue streams. For companies, diversification can take the form of expanding services, entering new customer segments, or serving industries with different supply chain requirements.

This approach also reflects the changing role of logistics providers, which are increasingly evolving from conventional transportation and warehousing operators into strategic partners in supply chain management. Changing customer expectations, digitalization, integrated logistics solutions, and growing demand for efficiency and flexibility are creating opportunities for companies to broaden their value propositions and move into adjacent areas where they can leverage existing capabilities.

At the same time, diversification cannot be separated from regulatory considerations and risk management. It emphasized the importance of business preparedness in navigating regulatory changes and adjustments to the Indonesian Standard Industrial Classification (KBLI). As companies expand into new areas, a clear understanding of applicable regulations becomes increasingly important to ensure that business expansion remains compliant and strategically sound.

Diversification, therefore, is not simply about entering new businesses. It requires companies to assess their existing capabilities, manage potential risks, allocate resources effectively, and ensure that new ventures generate sustainable value. Factors such as operational readiness, investment requirements, market potential, regulatory exposure, and the ability to leverage existing infrastructure and expertise will become increasingly important in determining whether diversification can deliver the expected growth.

By bringing together perspectives on the industry outlook, business diversification, resilience, and risk management, the Logistics Executive Forum 2026 highlighted a broader shift in the way companies need to approach growth. As supply chains become more complex and customer expectations continue to evolve, the ability to develop new growth engines while maintaining operational and regulatory resilience could become a defining factor for the competitiveness and sustainability of Indonesia’s logistics industry through 2031.
